We are always curious to know what today’s customers care about when it comes to hiring a contractor. We want to know what they look for and what kind of research they do to find the right reputable contractor for them. Luckily for us, we have a lot of customers – past and present – who are willing to give us feedback. Their candor helps us improve what we do and how we do it. What we have found is common sense and as business owners, we strive for excellence in everything we do. It actually surprises us to learn that so many don’t follow that same ethos.

People look for longevity, product quality, reliability, quality of service, good referrals, good reputation, and good price. But the number one thing our customers look for in a roofing company – reliability.

When consumers are having work done on their home, they want it done quickly and efficiently. In-home projects can take up a lot of time and space in someone’s home, so reliability is key. The last thing someone wants is to have to track down their contractor when they have a question or an issue arises. Reliable contractors will be ahead of the curve and contact the homeowner first before they have to track down the contractor. In a time where everyone has access to the internet and phone service almost all of the time, most consumers fully expect that they can get in touch with their contractor at any point, using any form of communication. And that’s definitely true—there is really no excuse for a contractor not to be able to respond to a customer’s call, text, or email in a timely manner.

Everyone wants a company that can cover all the bases and works with them every step along the way. Reasonable price and high-quality products are obviously a factor people look for, but without that reliability, it may not always be worth it in the end. Thanks to Google reviews, consumers can do plenty of research before they ever need to contact a potential business and weed out contractors that have poor reviews and don’t fit the bill they’re looking for.

An article showcasing customer behaviors in 2019 shows two key stats that prove how important online reviews actually are. First, 91 percent of consumers regularly or occasionally read reviews to determine whether a business is good or bad. Second, 84 percent of consumers find online reviews as trustworthy as a personal recommendation or referral. Keep in mind, these stats were taken in 2019, which means they could be even more apparent now!

Get Your Roof Winter Ready!

Fall is a magical and unpredictable season in the lower Cape Fear. and it’s the time of year when we should button up our homes as well as our jackets. Between now and the onset of winter cold, there are four things you can do to prepare your roof for bad weather.

CLEAN THE GUTTERS

When leaves and debris collect in your gutter system, eventually, it will create a clog in the downspouts. Rainwater will overflow the gutters, damaging your roof, trim, and siding. The added weight of the wet leaves and water could also cause your gutters to tug loose from the anchor point or collapse.

To prevent these problems and unforeseen repair costs, make sure to keep your gutters relatively clear through the fall. And, once the trees around your home are bare, do a radical cleaning. You can also get out ahead of the fall season and have gutter screens or guards installed to prevent the collection of debris in the first place. We recommend Master Shield gutter protection system.

CLEAR OFF DEBRIS

It’s important to get rid of leaves, pine needles, and other debris from the surface of your roof also as your gutters. Even small bits of debris will hold moisture and possibly rot or mold, which can break down your building material.

If you’re confident and experienced in walking on your roof, rise up there and broom or detach the debris that has collected on your roof, paying special attention to the valleys, which are most susceptible to water damage. Make sure they are free and clear of debris so as to allow water to flow.

CHECK FOR DAMAGES AND DETERIORATION

With a clean roof, scan the surface for missing shingles or ones that have cracked curled, or frayed edges. You can use binoculars to inspect from the ground or climb up to the roof to have a look.

Also check for damaged flashing around vent stacks, chimneys, and skylights. These areas are the usual suspects when you have a leak. Repairing flashing yourself might not always provide the results you expect, so give us a call and we’ll confirm everything is sealed properly before the rain hits.

ATTIC INSULATION AND VENTILATION

Without adequate airflow in your attic, you’ll be watching higher-than-necessary energy bills and roof leaks emerging during a snowstorm. During the day, sunlight hits your roof and heats up the air in your attic. Without vents located at the soffits, ridges, and/or gables of your roof, the air condensates, causing moisture damage and possible mold or rot in your roof’s supports.

This heat also can cause ice dams in higher elevations, inviting leaks when snow accumulates on your roof.

Additionally, when that hot air has nowhere else to go, it will seep into and overheat your living space, asking you to use your AC more than you have to. This is one of the reasons why insulation is so critical to an energy-efficient home.

To evaluate your attic insulation and ventilation, you’ll hire an energy auditor or weatherization contractor to try to do an inspection and make modifications.
